THE MACON MUSIC INITIATIVE
UNCLE DAVE MACON DAYS AND THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR TRADITIONAL AMERICAN MUSIC
For thirty six years, the Uncle Dave Macon Days festival has proven itself to be a major heritage event in Middle Tennessee. It has received numerous awards and recommendations from tourism media. Every July, over 30,000 people gather at Cannonsburgh Village in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to celebrate old time music with singing, dance, music storytelling, and historical preservation. The Uncle Dave Macon Days festival is a dynamic, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of old time music in Middle Tennessee.
“Old time music” is a term used to describe early forms of country music in the 1920’s and 1930’s before becoming overly commercialized and abandoning the primary use of acoustic instruments. Fortunately, old time music refers not only to music that exits only in old records and museums. It also refers to a current style that is very much alive today but is grounded in the earlier music. The extent of this “new” old time music can be seen every year at the Uncle Dave Macon Days as younger generations play in the older styles and rejuvenate the older songs.
